I can’t believe that I am actually saying this but guess what? I have a teenager. My son turned 13 in October of last year, and he was due for a much-needed room makeover. Out with the old cartoonish themed room decor and in with the new and modern teen boy room design. I love home decor, but I had a bit of a challenge with trying to decorate for him. There was absolutely nothing on Pinterest, and I didn’t want the average sports themed teen room. I wanted something that he could grow into because this would be the last time I decorated his room. After all, in just 5 short years, he would be off to college.
I knew just who to call to help me with this makeover. Ana and Ryan from A + R Design are good friends of ours and they recently started a home design company. Let me just say it was an honor to collaborate with you on this project! They did everything and took me way out of my comfort zone which is a good thing. A+R Design has the perfect modern style and helped me pull off the surprise of a lifetime for my son. His very own cool teen room. I couldn’t have been happier with how this room turned out. A+R Design even has me loving modern decor now, I used to be a farmhouse decor gal. LOL!
Here are a few tips and tricks that we used to pull this masculine and modern teen boy room design together.
Decide on a color
Let me be honest. I was thinking of something blue or grey which is the typical safe color, but Ana and Ryan suggested we paint the room black. My first reaction was ABSOLUTELY NOT, but after a bit of research and talking with them, I said, why not! The black turned out PERFECT! Black is the new neutral color, and it was perfect for my son’s room. We decided to keep two of the walls white so it would leave the room a bit more “open.”
What’s your style?
Before I even reached out to my friends Ana and Ryan at A+R Designs, I had to think about a style that my son could grow into. I didn’t want to spend time and money decorating a room and then he decides he doesn’t like it when he turns 17. I knew going with a modern and masculine design was something that he would love and something that would be timeless. I didn’t get to discuss it much with my son because it was a surprise but based on his reaction when he saw the room reveal looks like we were spot on.
Ana and Ryan were AMAZING with modern style. I felt so lost when I tried to look on my own, and when I collaborated with them, they guided me on exactly what to purchase and sent me the exact links. I literally didn’t have to think too much at all. They came over and measured the room, then sent me the sample design, and the rest is history. I say all this to say, trust your designers and know who to go to for what style. I truly can say, though, that A+R Design was the best choice for us.
It’s all in the details
Once we decided on the color, the rest was in the details. I wish I could say I spent all night trying to figure out what the perfect furniture would be, but I didn’t. Ana and Ryan sent me several options on styles that would fit the modern decor style, and I picked which ones I think would be the best fit for my son. Also, we were diligent in keeping track of what we purchased to keep account of our budget. My son loves basketball, so we opted to add a pop of color to the black room by getting these cool basketball photos. They were perfect above his bed.
Functionality
Functionality was important to me when deciding on how the room should be set up. I wanted some cool but functional furniture, which Ana and Ryan nailed, especially with this cool lounge chair that my son never wants to stop reading in. We opted for a low profile bed and added a study desk, which was a MUST. Because my son loves to read at night, we decided to put a few wall lamps next to his bed and install this functional wall bookshelf that also houses his memorabilia and doesn’t take up much space. Because we didn’t want to take up much space and keep his room simple, we added a garment rack instead of a dresser, and it turned out perfect. I mean, really, boys don’t have as many problems with selecting clothes as girls do. LOL!
My son was ELATED about his room design and loved every inch of it. When I researched teen boy room designs, I didn’t find much, so A+R Designs really nailed it with this one. I couldn’t be more pleased. He was so excited to celebrate his birthday in his new room, and he got to his favorite food, my homemade tacos.
