If your kids are in homeschool/virtual school, you MUST SEE this homeschool learning area!
Welcome! I guess you are just like I was in July, trying to figure out how life will come together during and after a pandemic. Rest assured, momma, things will be ok, and we will get back to normal at some point. But for now, we gotta do what we gotta do. I struggled with the decision to pull my kids from public school after our virtual learning experience in March because virtual learning was not working for my boys or myself. I knew I had to do something, and after much research, my husband and I decided that homeschool was the best route for our boys in this season. You can read more about why we decided to homeschool here. With that being said, we had to get a homeschool learning area set up for my boys if we were going to jump into teaching them at home.
First, let me mention that the goal was never to have school at home. Our philosophy is that our kids are always learning, so we make the most out of every experience to make it an educational opportunity for them. Most times that means answering the 5 million questions that my 7-year-old has about everything. LOL! So that meant this homeschool learning area had to be conducive for learning, lounging, and play.
Cozy Area/Reading Nook
Next, I wanted to create a space that still felt like home to them and an area they felt comfortable learning. That meant they needed all things comfy, and some added fun stuff to go along with it. I wanted to make the area surrounding the television cozy. Hence, I added fun accent pieces to the built-in bookshelves, a new cool rug, and a freestanding bookshelf to make the area have a reading nook and place to watch television. I always fill my home with amazing books because I want to encourage my boys to READ. For the most part, they enjoy reading and listening to books on audible. I have a whole list of book recommendations for boys here.
I also needed a space to house their curriculum and binders easily accessible, so I went to my local Ikea and grabbed some cubbies. They worked out perfectly. I added a few large photos of them above it, and they love it. My boys feel like this space is theirs, and that was the whole goal!
Desks
After that, I thought long and hard about how I was going to arrange the desks. After much thought, I knew it would be a brilliant idea to face them towards the home’s windows, so they have exposure to some natural light and see the beautiful landscape and nature surrounding our home. The funny thing is that they always see something outside, so far we have seen squirrels, armadillos, and a whole array of birds.
Organizing Supplies
I bought a few of these carts to add all their pencils, art supplies, and knick-knacks. We also put their diversional gadgets there because if you have boys as I do, then you know the importance of them giving them something to do with their hands during learning actually helps their brains work better, so the fidget spinners, play dough, stress balls, and thinking putty are all housed in these carts, and my boys LOVE it.
Next, I added a white table that I use daily when teaching the boys independently, and we use this same table for all of our arts and crafts and lego projects! I bought the cutest sign that says, “The fun stuff happens here.”
Wall Decor
Lastly, I bought a few maps to hang on the walls and some cool grammar and multiplication facts we often use during learning. Our learning room isn’t perfect, but it’s perfect for our home. My kids love the atmosphere of this area, and they feel like it’s “their” area. They love learning, reading a good book, watching tv, playing a board game, or playing their video games while snuggling on their comfy couch. I must admit, I wasn’t going to decorate this space before the pandemic, but now I am grateful that I did. When decorating your learning space for your kids, use what you have, and add the must-have essential items that you need for them to learn. Remember, this is their home too, and you don’t want to make it too “schooly.” I actually think kids learn better in their environment if it feels like home.
I hope this post gave you tons of ideas on what you can do with your homeschool learning area. What are a few essentials that you have in your kid’s learning space?

Sherrell!!!!! I love this space you have created for the boys! I have to say making stations can make all the difference! That way they are in a constant new space with her thinking!
Love all the decorating elements too!!!!

You got that right! Boys have to constantly be using their hands and moving so stations are a must. Thank you for taking the time to read and comment.
