My List of Top Boys Books
Quarantine video games to take over my boys’ leisure time. They were addicted to wanting to play video games ALL THE TIME. Since starting homeschool 7 weeks ago, I decided that I had to put a STOP to those video games and give my boys something more productive to do with their brains. LOL! Since starting our homeschool journey (you can read that blog post here) and dramatically cutting video game time (except for their trips to grandma’s house), my boys have developed a love of reading. I am intentional about leaving great books throughout the house for them to read. Here are a few of my top boys’ books:
Elementary School (Pre-k-3rd)
Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown
I Am Perfectly Designed by Karamo Brown
Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwall
Rosa Parks by Nikki Giovani
Dog Man series by Dave Pilkey
My second grader loves reading Dog Man comic books now, so of course, he insists that I include them.
Late Elementary School (4th-5th grades)
STAT: Standing Tall and Talented
The Akimbo Adventures by Alexander Mccall Smith
Tippy Lemmey by Patricia C. McKissack
Bud, Not Buddy by Kwame Alexander
Middle School (6th-7th grade)
Tristan Strong Punches a Hole In The Sky by Kwame Mbalia
Big Nate Says Good-Bye To Dork City by Lincoln Peirce
The Unteachables by Gordon Korman
Flying Lessons & Other Stories
How to Foster A Love of Reading
I know what you are thinking…how in the world do I develop a love of reading for my kids? Here are a few ways you can foster a love of reading in your home:
- Make frequent visits to your local library
- Limit screen time and celebrate the day by reading PHENOMENAL books ALL day
- Attend an online book fair
- Host a virtual book club with friends
- Find books that spark your child’s interests and imagination (don’t give up…be relentless in pursuit of what sets their little imaginations on fire)
- Keep your home library stocked with fascinating books (and if you homeschool, provide a literature-rich education)
- Read aloud to your kids (nope, it doesn’t matter how old they are)
- Get lost in a good book MAMA! They will do what they see you do
Now that you know a few of my top boys’ books, what are a few books that your children like to read?
