When it comes to decorating for a tween boy’s room, your girl had to reach out for help. I had to find the perfect tween boy room for my sweet son. After I finished decorating for my youngest son’s room, I legit had decor fatigue. LOL! I decided to partner with my friends at A+R Design and after just a few quick phone calls, she sent me the perfect room design for my son. I can’t rave about this company enough. Parents often get stuck when decorating for tweens because it feels like a battle of the fittest. LOL! You both know what you want, but you want to be sure it matches your tween’s preferences. You want the room to be one that they will love. After all, they have to sleep there. LOL! Here are a few tips that I suggest when decorating a room for your tween
What’s their favorite hobby?
Ask them what they love and go from there. My son loves playing video games and spending time with friends. I wanted the room to match his personality. Therefore, A+R Design and I agreed that this room needs to be a room fit for a gamer. LOL! My son fell in love with the wallpaper the moment he laid eyes on it.
What’s their favorite color?
Next, you want to think about what colors your tween loves. My son loves the color orange, so we wanted to incorporate those colors throughout the design. We found the perfect orange rug here. Sometimes, this is an area where you can agree on a color scheme, so you would add colors that are complementary to the colors that they love. For this room, we opted to add blues with his orange.
Quality over quantity!
My boys are rough and tough on their stuff. LOL! I want to get great pieces for their rooms that will last. Be sure you consider these quality pieces when planning your budget. When purchasing items, I think about if the item will last for the next ten years. I don’t just look at if the item is on sale (although that is an important factor); I also consider if this piece will last. After that, I consider the cost, and if it will survive in the next ten years, then it may be a worthy investment. I also asked my tween what items he wanted in his room. This was more like a wish list with the understanding he may not get everything, but he may get some things. After that, I incorporate those some of those cool pieces if they are within the budget. My son asked for a PS4 for his birthday and of course that was around the same time we were redecorating. I knew it was something he would love and would be perfect for his theme and he loved it. Once again, be sure these items are within your overall budget for the design.
Looking back, I am so glad that my tween son and I could agree on the perfect tween boy room for him. It was so important for me to really listen to him throughout this process. It was the perfect time for us to work together, and it really brought us closer. I also made sure I added some of my favorite baby photos of him on the walls, along with some great books. The baby photos were his favorite surprise.
